Monstrap is based on a Venus fly trap. Parts of it's design may suggest that it could be based off the iconic fictional carnivorous plant, Audrey II from the 1960'/1980's Broadway Film, Little Shop of Horrors. It could also be based off the Piranha Plants, most likely Petey Piranha, from the Super Mario Franchise.
Monstrap's name comes from Monster and trap, as in Venus fly trap.
