Substitute is an Normal-type status move. It is TM90 and can be bought at the Game Corner at Rustbolt City.

Effect

Substitute uses 25% of the user's total HP to create a Substitute; if the user does not have enough HP remaining, the move fails. The Substitute will then take damage for the user until it runs out of health.

Any damage over the maximum health of the Substitute is blocked, but multi-strike moves will continue attacking after a Substitute is broken. Substitutes do not protect the user from damage from effects such as confusion, recoil, weather damage, or a Life Orb.

While a Substitute is up, the user cannot be inflicted with any status condition, have its lowered, or be caused to flinch by an opponent's move. Some secondary effects from moves such as Knock Off, Thief, or Dragon Tail are also cancelled. Preexisting status conditions and lowered stats persist after a Substitute is created. Moves used by a Pokémon with Infiltrator bypass Substitutes, as do the following:
